Nicholas Dynon
Line 21 Project Curator
Nicholas is a Phd candidate in International Communication at
Macquarie University, Sydney. His research explores the prospects
for Chinese public diplomacy through an analysis of China
Daily and People's Daily reportage of the
2008 Lhasa riots and Wenchuan earthquake in the critical period
leading up to the Beijing Olympic Games.
A former career officer of the Australian Government’s Department
of Immigration and Border Protection, Nicholas served in Canberra
and Sydney and as a diplomat in Shanghai (Vice Consul), Beijing
(First Secretary) and the Fiji Islands (First Secretary), followed
by secondment to Parliament House, Canberra, as a departmental
liaison officer.
Nicholas holds masters degrees in Asian Studies and International
Relations from the Australian National University and the
University of Sydney respectively, and is a graduate of the Royal
Military College of Australia. He has also studied Chinese at the
Beijing International Studies University.
Nicholas' peer-reviewed research has appeared in The China Journal, Place Branding and Public Diplomacy and China: an International Journal. He has written for several publications, inlcuding the Jamestown Foundation's China Brief, The Diplomat, New Zealand Security Magazine, Line of Defence Magazine, The Public Diplomat, Global Times, National Business Review, the USC Center on Public Diplomacy's CPD Blog and DiploFoundation's Internet Governance channel.
His areas of research include propaganda and media in China, public diplomacy and soft power, terrorism, cyber conflict and information security, and international security. Nicholas' twitter handle is @nxdynon.
